New NYC Boiler Inspection Deadline Rapidly Approaching

The end of 2009 signals another annual inspection cycle ending for thousands of devices in New York City. While most areas will see a “business as usual” attitude for filing, the same cannot be said about boilers. The annual low-pressure inspection saw significant code changes take effect this year that changed the process for inspection agencies and, consequently, property managers.

Specifically, the annual inspection saw two major changes. The first was a shifting of the filing deadline.  Normally December 31st, the date has been pushed up to November 15th. 2010 and all future years will see the cycle run from November 16th of the current year to November 15th of the following year.

The second major change was the requirement to repair any deficiencies found during the inspection. In short, it means if your inspection was without violations or deficiencies you simply file form BO-9 as always. If, however, deficiencies were noted you must have someone resolve the issues and then file form BO-13 to affirm that the repairs actually occurred. Any licensed plumber or oil burner installer is able to perform the affirmation or re-inspection. From the date of the first inspection you have 45 days to repair, perform the re-inspection,
and file the appropriate documents. Failure to file may result in fines of $1000 per boiler.
